This practice-based workshop is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy students who have an interest in or are new to the provision of consultant pharmacist services in skilled nursing facilities. It is designed to help pharmacists gain the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective consultant pharmacist.

This workshop encourages participants to apply the knowledge gained in the self-study materials. In addition to reviewing the regulations pertinent to consultant pharmacy practice, faculty will assist participants as they work through "real-life" activities of the consultant pharmacist, including medication regimen reviews, preventing and correcting regulatory deficiencies, and working effectively with surveyors. Participants must have completed the self-study portion of this program to participate in the live workshop.

Program Elements

  • A self-study-based reading activity that requires the purchase of ASCP's Consultant Pharmacist Handbook
  • A live activity consisting of eight hours of interactive lecture, and case studies

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the consultant pharmacist's responsibilities in the nursing facility.
  • Explain how the State Operations Manual (SOM) is used in nursing facilities.
  • Differentiate the intent of the five major medication-related F-Tags.
  • List the medications requiring a gradual dose reduction (GDR) and which medications require behavior monitoring.
  • Discuss the purpose of the nursing home survey and the consultant pharmacist’s role in the survey process.
  • Perform a medication regimen review (MRR), including gathering data, identifying potential and actual medication-related problems (MRPs), prioritizing MRPs, documenting the MRR, and making recommendations to other health care providers.
  • Develop a business plan for consultant pharmacist practice in an institutional setting.
  • Name the terms set forth in a contractual agreement.
